I am having a hard time finding a full-time accountant position in New York City. All I have been to obtain is temp assignments. What should I do?
But before I get to your question, I need to ask why you think temporary positions are such a bad thing. Temping is a great way to gain experience, build your network, and get your foot in the door of a number of potential employers. So, while you may not want to make a career of temping (although some job-seekers do), please do not discount the many opportunities temporary jobs can offer you.
To obtain a full-time job in accounting, you need to do the same things as any other job-seeker seeking employment. You need to develop and implement a job-search strategy. Your job-search strategy should include multiple sources of job-hunting, including:
- Networking. Take advantage of contacts you have made with previous employers, professional and social organizations, and other groups. Talk with your friends and family. The idea of networking is that the people you talk with may not be able to hire you, but they may know someone who IS looking to hire an accounting professional. Get more information.
- Company-specific searches. Because more and more companies are putting their entire HR function on their Website, it’s a good idea to regularly visit the employment area of key employer Websites. Find employers.
- College career services/alumni. It doesn’t matter how long ago you graduated from college. Use those college connections to gain ideas, support, contacts, and job leads.
- Headhunters/recruiters. Take the time to build relationships with a few select accounting-specific headhunters in the New York City area. Get more information.
- Job boards. If you have the time, use all three types of job boards to review job postings and/or post your resume. General job sites will have the largest number of job listings overall, but not necessarily in your field or location. Geographic-specific job sites will have employers in your area, but perhaps not in your field. And industry-specific job sites (such as AwesomeAccountants.com) will have jobs in your field, but perhaps not in your geographic area. Go to this section of Quintessential Careers to find a comprehensive list of job sites.
