To Get Deserved Salary, Move to Another Employer

I am currently working at Reebok International. I have been with them for almost 2 years. When I got to Reebok I knew very little about what I was being hired for. I was very skilled in the technology field, but the system I was being to administer was new to me.

Almost 2 years later, I am ready to get an increase in pay. I currently make $38,000, but the standard in my industry is at least $55,000. I have approached my boss and HR many times for a raise and my boss said that in any company to get a raise, you need to change to another company.

My resume has been on the Internet in serveral well-known sites, and I have not gotten very many responses. I have also been working very hard at gaining Web-developer skills. I would like to move in this direction; experience is what I lack in the Web-developer area.

In either case I would like to get out there and start interviewing. Do you have any suggestions?

The Career Doctor responds:

It’s all too often a truism — that to earn the salary you deserve based on your market value, you often have to move to a different company. More progressive employers look beyond the 5 percent raises and make adjustments based on your current expertise and value. It’s unfortunate that Reebok is not such a progressive employer.

If you truly feel you want to leave your current company — and if you are sure about the salary numbers — then you will need to develop a job-search strategy. Just putting your resume out there won’t get you a job — or not one that matches your expectations and desires.

You seem to have a good rapport with your boss, so why not use his or her network, as well as your own, to find a new job? Networking is the most efficient way to find a new job. You should not abandon other methods, of job-hunting, such as using job sites and technology-specific job sites, as well as company Web sites.
